Zidane's first France squad: five new caps, four exclusions and a spine that is not built yet

At 1 a.m. I downloaded France's 23-name list, printed it, and drew three horizontal lines across the sheet to separate defence, midfield and attack. The result was balanced to the point of being dull: 3 goalkeepers, 8 defenders, 6 midfielders, 6 forwards. A textbook four-match window squad.

In two years of watching him, I have never seen him stand there. He is a central midfielder. And the structure of this sheet tells three stories the headline about a host of surprises does not.

Context: four matches in ten days

Zinedine Zidane takes the France job, succeeding Didier Deschamps, who held it from July 2026, won the 2026 World Cup and finished runner-up in 2026. This is his first squad.

The calendar is unforgiving: away in Turkey on 25 September, away in Belgium on 28 September, Italy at the Stade de France on 2 October, then Belgium again three days later. The list also has to be read alongside two injury lines: William Saliba is out injured, Aurelien Tchouameni is not fully recovered. A spine that is not built yet

France's defence is in reconstruction, and that is the biggest break from the Deschamps era. Dropping both Hernandez brothers and Digne at once amounts to a formal reset of the left-back position. Truffert's return after five years reads as a signal of scarcity rather than of form.

What stands out is that Zidane still carries a thick centre-back group: Upamecano, Konate, Lacroix, Kalulu and Jacquet, who is uncapped. Five centre-backs for four matches. If he goes with a back three in Istanbul, I will read that as risk avoidance, not as tactical progress. Midfield is the least predictable line. With Tchouameni short of full fitness and Camavinga just returning, the holding role is likely to fall to less-capped personnel: Manu Kone and Warren Zaire-Emery. Where the attack is settled, and where the risk sits

Six forwards: Mbappe, Dembele, Olise, Doue, Barcola, Lepaul. At first glance this is the most settled unit. Look closer and only Mbappe carries the profile of a true penalty-box No.9. The other five are wide or inside-forward types. If Mbappe is rested for one of the four matches — near-certain at this density — France has no like-for-like replacement on the list.

Based on my experience of watching matches, the biggest risk at a major team usually sits at the position with no replacement, not at the position talked about most. At centre-back there are five options. At No.9 there is one.

Five of the twenty-three names have never played for the senior team, roughly 21.7 percent. That ratio alone forces Zidane into a two-tier usage plan: the strongest XI for the highest-value fixture, experimentation elsewhere. Restes, Jacquet, Da Cunha, Diouf and Lepaul will not all start, and which of them gets real minutes will say more than any press conference.

That reading ignores a simpler fact: with Saliba injured and Tchouameni not fully fit, part of what is called a surprise is a forced consequence. Two spine positions lose their men, replacements appear, and the story gets retold as a revolution. I separate intent from necessity, because the two have very different shelf lives.

There is another issue readers at home are rarely warned about: the source report shows internal contradictions. It says Restes came in for Brice Samba, yet Samba appears nowhere in the published list. It says the Deschamps tenure lasted fourteen years, a figure that only holds if the piece was written for a date that has not arrived. It classifies Diouf as a defender. It claims Jacquet made a strong start at Liverpool and Diouf a fine start at Inter Milan, both without sourcing.

The paper edition closes, but the tactical map starts to open. My trade taught me that a national squad list is a verifiable artefact, and a verifiable artefact must be verified. When domestic outlets translate an aggregator without checking the official announcement, they transmit error rather than information.

What to watch, not what to guess

On asset value, five first-time call-ups enter a repricing window on the strength of one announcement. The transfer market resembles a chess game in which everyone believes they are a player — but this board is built by the medical room and the fixture list, and nobody sits at that table.

Istanbul on 25 September will answer a few questions more concretely than any prediction. Back four or back three? Mbappe central or drifting left? How many debutants get real minutes? Data never shouts, but it whispers loudly enough for anyone willing to listen. The match in Istanbul does not need to be a beautiful win. It only needs to show whether Zidane is building a real spine, or filling injury-shaped holes with names.
